An Oil-less Vessel

“But God told Samuel, “Looks aren’t everything. Don’t be impressed with his looks and stature. I’ve already eliminated him. God judges persons differently than humans do. Men and women look at the face; God looks into the hehart.” ~1 Samuel 16:7 MSG

In 1 Samuel chapter 16, we read of God rejecting Saul as king of Israel and getting ready to anoint a new king. His instructions were clear; “go to Jesse’s house, for there is where the next king is.” Seven of Jesse’s sons stood before Samuel, but the oil didn’t flow for either of the seven. Surely they thought that one of them would be the next king because of their looks or their height and build, but the Lord rejected each of them. After “interviewing” all seven, Samuel asked, “is there not another son?” Jesse said, “well yes, there is one more. He’s the youngest. He’s out with the sheep.” Samuel said “bring him to me.” Once young David came in, the OIL began to flow. Verse 13 says “Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed David in the presence of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward.” (AMP)

You may want to be careful not to discount, discredit and shun those that GOD has called because YOU don’t know them or because YOU don’t like them.  The anointing of God is EVIDENT on some people and because they’re not with “the in-crowd” or the “newest, hottest” church, people don’t believe that they’re anointed. Oh, how wrong we are! The scripture above lets us know that it can be the very one that NOBODY thinks is worthy, that is found worthy! Daniel 2:21 says, And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings… which denotes that God has the sovereign ability to raise up someone that is not chosen of people, but chosen of Him, to perform that HE wishes to perform. God gives “oil” to those who can handle it. Not to those that are merely popular. Not to those that “bring a good crowd.” He gives the oil to a vessel that can hold, handle and maintain HIS GLORY!

That being said, we’ve got to stop calling everything and everyone anointed! That’s simply not the truth! Yes, they belong to your church; Yes, they’ve been there forever; but there is no anointing evident! We have too many oil-less vessels standing before our people week after week, WITH NO OIL, because they’ve been there the longest or because we don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings. People preach, pray, sing……and not one demon trembles. Not one of the saints are edified. Why? Because that vessel has NO OIL! If you are one that wonders why nobody “goes in” when you’re up, check your vessel. You may be out of oil. Has your life and lifestyle had an effect on how people receive you? That affects your oil flow! GO BACK TO THE ALTAR! Wait until it’s your time. Don’t be one of the “seven sons.” Be the one that everyone overlooks. Be the one found working. Be the one found “tending to the sheep.” A certain look doesn’t bring the oil. A certain social status does not bring the oil. A chosen vessel gets the oil. Don’t be an oil-less vessel.
