Our God is not just a God who sits, looks and hands out blessings. He moves. He loves. He performs miracles. And, HE SPEAKS! Isn’t it wonderful that our God isn’t so big that He won’t take out time to speak to us? David said in Psalms 116:2 (NLT), “Because he bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath!” He will listen and He will speak. You may have asked yourself, “How can I get God to speak to me?” Well let’s look at this a bit further…
Hearing from God is primarily a heart issue. You will hear from God when you decide to make HIS WILL your priority. There has to be a steadfast devotion to Him. You can’t hit and miss. If you’re not hearing from Him, check your heart. There’s a disconnect somewhere between your heart and His voice. Deliberate, repeated and habitual disobedience will silence God’s voice. In John 10:27, Jesus says ” My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” When He doesn’t have your heart, you don’t have His voice. This calls for prayer and consecration. Ask Him to declutter your heart so that you will be able to hear His voice. Put that phone down for a while. Turn the computer/tv off for a while. Give up something that you really don’t want to give up. Let Him know how serious you are about hearing from Him. He’s waiting on YOU. Not the other way around.
Listening to God is OUR decision. No one else can make it for us. God won’t force us to choose to hear His voice, but He will do everything He can to encourage us to say Yes to Him, His ways and His voice. And if you’ve said Yes to Him, never hesitate to take every little thing to Him. He will tell you what to do. Now, you may not like what He says, but, it’ll be good for you! Often times, we want God to want what we want. That’s not how this works. We’re supposed to want what HE wants! Donald Lawrence made a song that said “If you need to know God’s plan for your life, get in the spirit; let the Lord minister to you.” His Holy Spirit is a speaking spirit. Get in position. Make yourself an open and willing vessel.
In the book of 1st Samuel, you’ll find that in those days the Lord wasn’t doing a whole bunch of talking. But, those that served Him, He spoke to. Samuel was just a boy, but he was a servant of God. God spoke to him. Samuel was sleeping when he heard God’s voice. It’s not uncommon to hear God while you’re sleeping. But, when he heard it, he thought that it was Eli calling him. As that chapter ends, Samuel spoke what he heard God say. He went on to become a great prophet of God. I pointed this out because you’ll have a better chance hearing from God if you have a servant’s heart. The 3rd time that Samuel heard the voice of God, he replied, “speak Lord, for your servant is listening.” That’s all God wants is a servant that will hear Him and LISTEN. You don’t need a title in the Lord’s church to hear His voice. You just need an open ear. Revelation 2:17 says, “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the church.” WE ARE THE CHURCH! Open your spiritual ears and be attentive to what He wants to say to YOU!
Until next week…..
